🪸 Hệ sinh thái rạn san hô tại khu vực đảo Hòn Tài thuộc vịnh Vân Phong có phân bố không đồng đều, tại mặt Nam đảo rạn san hô phân bố ở độ sâu từ 2 mét trở xuống, trong khi ở khu vực phía bắc đảo rạn san hô phân bố ở độ sâu lớn hơn từ khoảng 6m trở xuống. Thành phần loài san hô tại đây khá đa dạng và không có loài chiếm ưu thế lớn về số lượng. Một số họ có số lượng loài cao như Acroporidae, Fungiidae, Merulinidae, Lobophylliidae. Đặc biệt, tại đây có ghi nhận một số loài san hô quý hiếm có tên trong sách đỏ Việt Nam như loài Pocillopora damicornis. Ngoài ra còn có một số loài san hô sừng Sea fan có giá trị thẩm mĩ như Melithea ochracea.

🐠 Về thành phần loài cá rạn cũng khá phong phú với nhiều loài khác nhau, tuy nhiên mật độ các loài cá rạn là không cao. Và tập trung chủ yếu là các loài cá kích thước nhỏ như các họ cá Thia (Pomacentridae), cá thần tiên, ít ghi nhận các loài cá có kích thước lớn và có giá trị thực phẩm như họ cá Kẽm (Haemulidae), họ cá Hồng (Lutjanidae), họ cá Mú (Serranidae). Tuy nhiên, trong ca lặn đêm nhóm đã ghi nhận được một cá thể cá Mú (Epinephelus maculatus) có kích thước lớn khoảng 40-50cm.
🦀 Cũng tương tự như cá rạn, thành phần loài động vật không xương sống trong rạn ghi nhận khá đa dạng với nhiều loài khác nhau tập trung trong các nhóm chính như Thân mềm, Giáp xác và Da gai, tuy nhiên mật độ các loài động vật không xương sống đáy ghi nhận được cũng không cao. Một số loài thường bắt gặp như cầu gai đen (Diadema setosum), ngoài ra cũng bắt gặp vài cá thể sao biển gai (Acanthaster planci) trong rạn.

🟢 Về độ phủ san hô tại khu vực hòn Tài còn khá tốt, một số chỗ độ phủ còn khá tốt lên đến bậc 3-4 tức là khoảng từ 50-75% diện tích đáy biển được bao phủ bởi các tập đoàn san hô sống. Sử dụng thang đo Coral Watch cho thấy tình trạng sức khỏe của phần lớn các tập đoàn san hô tại khu vực Hòn Tài đang ở mức 4-5 tức là ở mức sức khỏe Bình thường đến Tốt. Ngoài ra, thỉnh thoảng vẫn bắt gặp tình trạng tẩy trắng của các tập đoàn san hô tại khu vực này, tuy nhiên tỷ lệ tẩy trắng là tương đối nhỏ. Điều này là một tin đáng mừng cho thấy rạn san hô tại đây đã vượt qua được đợt khủng hoảng về tẩy trắng trên diện rộng trong đợt tháng 4-6 trên nhiều khu vực vừa qua.

👽 Nhìn chung, hiện tại khu vực rạn san hô tại Hòn Tài còn khá tốt, ít có dấu hiệu tác động của con người. Tuy nhiên, hiện nay tại khu vực mặt phía bắc của đảo Hòn Tài đang có sự phát triển của một loại sinh vật nhỏ chưa rõ là gì phủ khá nhiều trên đáy biển, nên cần phải có các nghiên cứu sâu hơn để làm rõ vấn đề này. [Cập nhật 22/10/2024 ➤] Tuy nhiên, hiện nay tại khu vực mặt phía bắc của đảo Hòn Tài đang có sự phát triển của một loài thuộc lớp Hải tiêu (Ascidiacea), phân ngành Có bao (Tunicata), loài này phát triển mạnh và phủ khá nhiều trên đá và san hô chết dưới đáy biển. Hiện vẫn chưa rõ ảnh hưởng của loài này đến hệ sinh thái tại đây, tuy nhiên các loài hải tiêu thường phát triển mạnh với mật độ cao ở những vùng nước ven bờ giàu dinh dưỡng, vì vậy cần có thêm các theo dõi và nghiên cứu sâu hơn để làm rõ vấn đề này. Ngoài ra, việc phát triển mạnh nuôi trồng thủy sản trên diện tích rộng có thể làm suy giảm chất lượng môi trường nước, từ đó có thể ảnh hưởng gián tiếp đến hệ sinh thái rạn san hô tại đây nếu nguồn nước bị ô nhiễm.

🪸 The coral reef ecosystem around Hòn Tài Island in Vân Phong Bay is unevenly distributed. In the southern part of the island, coral reefs are found at depths of 2 meters and below, while in the northern part, reefs are located at greater depths, typically starting from around 6 meters. The species composition of corals here is quite diverse, with no single species dominating in terms of number of individual colonies. Some coral families with a high species count include Acroporidae, Fungiidae, Merulinidae, and Lobophylliidae. Notably, some rare coral species listed in Vietnam's Red Book, such as Pocillopora damicornis, have been recorded in this area. Additionally, aesthetically valuable sea fan corals, like Melithea ochracea, are also present.

🐠 Regarding reef fish species, the diversity is also considerable, though the overall density of reef fish is low. Most of the fish observed are smaller species, such as members of the Pomacentridae (damselfish) family, and angelfish. Larger species, particularly those with food value, such as members of the Haemulidae (grunt), Lutjanidae (snapper), and Serranidae (grouper) families, are scarce. However, during a night dive, the group did spot a large Epinephelus maculatus grouper, measuring approximately 40-50 cm.

🦀 Similar to the reef fish, the diversity of invertebrates found within the reef is quite high, with numerous species belonging to the main groups of mollusks, crustaceans, and echinoderms. However, the density of benthic invertebrates is also low. Some commonly encountered species include the black sea urchin (Diadema setosum), and a few individuals of crown-of-thorns starfish (Acanthaster planci) were also observed in the reef.
🟢 Coral cover in the Hòn Tài area remains fairly healthy, with some locations showing coverage levels between 50-75% of the seabed being covered by live coral colonies. Using the CoralWatch health chart, most coral colonies in Hòn Tài are rated at levels 4 to 5, meaning in a Fair to Good condition. Occasional coral bleaching events were noted, but the extent was relatively minor. This is encouraging, as it suggests that the reef here has recovered from the widespread bleaching crisis that affected many areas during April-June of this year.

👽 Overall, the coral reef ecosystem at Hòn Tài is still in good condition, with little evidence of human impact. However, in the northern part of Hòn Tài Island, there has been the growth of a small, unidentified organism that covers a significant portion of the seabed. Further research is needed to identify and understand this organism. [Update 22/10/2024 ➤] However, there is currently a noticeable growth of a species from the class Ascidiacea (sea squirts), subphylum Tunicata, on the northern side of Hòn Tài island. This species is spreading rapidly, covering large portions of rocks and dead coral on the seabed. While the impact of this species on the local ecosystem is still unclear, sea squirts typically thrive in coastal waters rich in nutrients, which raises concerns. Further monitoring and research are needed to better understand the situation. Additionally, the rapid expansion of aquaculture in the area may reduce water quality, potentially having indirect negative effects on the coral reef ecosystem if water pollution increases.
